Tested over a 3-month vanlife road trip around Europe & UK
The Van Door
There’s always a pair of shoes that ends up living by the van door. The ones you reach for without thinking. On a three-month road trip, that role was taken by a pair of XTRATUF camp boots. And this XTRATUF boots review is based on how they held up over three months of real vanlife use.
From muddy campsites in the Lake District to powder snow in the Pyrenees, these boots were tested completely … not just worn for a weekend. When you’re living a life of adventure, you don’t get to choose the conditions. You just step outside and enjoy whatever’s out there.
So, are XTRATUF boots actually worth it for vanlife? Here’s how they performed when it mattered.

“When you’re living a life of adventure, you don’t get to choose the conditions.”
What Are XTRATUF Boots?
If you’ve spent any time around coastal towns or working harbours, you’re in XTRATUF territory. Originally designed for commercial fishermen, they’ve built a reputation for handling wet, unpredictable conditions where grip and waterproofing are essential.
That heritage has recently earned respect beyond the fishing world. From winter surfers to people chasing powder in the mountains. These aren’t just another pair of outdoor boots now marketed for occasional countryside walks. They’re built for daily use in harsh, cold conditions. And this winter, my boots saw it all.
While putting together this XTRATUF boots review, that background felt relevant. Vanlife might look different to life on a fishing boat, but the conditions aren’t that far off. You’re constantly stepping out into rain, mud, or uneven ground, often multiple times a day. You need something reliable, easy to throw on, and tough enough to deal with whatever’s outside the van door.
That’s where XTRATUF sits in a slightly different category to most outdoor footwear. These are not technical footwear. They are comfortable foul weather boots designed to keep you happy in real-world conditions.

Why Footwear Matters in Vanlife
As comfy as the 7m motorhome I am travelling in is, the reality of doing anything outside during the winter is likely going to involve mud, gravel and wet grass. Hey, you might even bring back sand from the beach or snow from the mountain too.
You’re constantly coming and going from the van throughout the day, no matter where you are parked up.
This was the biggest win for me. Pulling on the XTRATUF camp boots was literally like sliding on a slipper. No faff lacing things up, or cinching anything down. Notably, kicking the boots off was just as easy and really helped keep dirt out of the camper van.
The XTRATUF boots were left inside the van door when we were in motion, and kicked under the door step when we were at camp. The durability of the boots was certainly tested when one was caught in the retracting door-step, and also driven over.
Still looking like new after 3 months constant use, I don’t hesitate to worry that the boots are still anything less than fully waterproof.
Key Features That Matter
Here’s what stood out most to me about the XTRATUF boots after three months of daily use:
Waterproof Performance
Fully waterproof camp boots. You could find yourself outside for hours trying to fix something in foul weather, so anything water-resistant just won’t cut it long term. The XTRATUF boots review I can report back is quite simply – they kept my feet dry and warm during an incredibly wet autumn in the UK!
Grip & Traction
I’ve had wet shoes slip off the foot pedals on a number of occasions. The XTRATUF boots didn’t slip on me once. While these are not a walking boot, I did take them outside on a few walks that went beyond the supermarket. On the trail they gave enough grip and traction to not make me worry about falling over in snow and ice.
Comfort & flexibility
The rubber sole is made to grip wet fishing boat decks, which is soft and light on the underfoot. And a faux shearling lining on the camp boots I have kept my feet incredibly warm during the depths of winter. Nothing like a typical rubber welly that often gives you blisters.
Ease of use
The XTRATUF boots were my go-to shoe anytime I had to step out of the camper van. I washed the vehicle wearing them, topped up the water, emptied the waste water tanks and so on. Hey, I’ve even been repairing one of my other vehicles wearing them as the thickness is enough to protect the foot to a large degree. The pull-tabs make pulling the boot on simple, and washing them off when needed is a simple task.

What They’re Like to Live With
As I already mentioned, these boots lived near the door. Having to deal with anything outside the comfort of the camper van felt that little bit easier having the XTRATUF boots on my feet.
Maybe the biggest positive of having them ready for stepping into was the fact they can so easily be washed off, compared to regular shoes or boots.
And when the conditions call for protective footwear, I would no longer think twice about what to put on my feet. After 3 months constant use they still look as good as new, and can be dressed up or down with most daily clothing.

Final XTRATUF Boots Review Verdict
Great for: vanlife, coastal walks, dog walks, wet climates, snow days.
Maybe not for: long hikes, hot/dry conditions.
A well-priced piece of gear that quickly became essential on this trip. The XTRATUF boots review scores a firm 9.5/10 on our rating.
After three months of constant use, our feet stayed dry, warm, and protected. That alone makes the £99.00 price tag worthwhile.
But more than that, they made everyday vanlife easier. Less cleaning inside the van, less hesitation stepping outside, and one less decision to make each day.
I really like the colour options the boots are available in, and the camp pair in particular with the faux shearling liner, are the sort of boots I have been looking for when it is time to navigate dark, cold and gloomy winter weather.
